Revitalise South Queensferry: A Rallying Cry to Save Our Beloved High Street!
Mar 15, 2024Amidst rising concerns for the survival of the high street, Edinburgh Council faces calls to bestow South Queensferry with the coveted 'town centre' status, a move aimed at revitalising its commercial landscape.
The historic Royal Burgh, distinguished by its heritage and community spirit, is currently excluded from the list of Edinburgh's nine officially recognised town centres.
This omission not only sidelines South Queensferry in strategic development plans but also deprives it of critical protections and resources that are readily available to other designated areas.
Championed by Councillor Euan Hyslop and Councillor Norrie Work, they seek to elevate South Queensferry to the same standing as other key shopping destinations within the capital, such as Corstorphine, Leith Walk, and Portobello.
The designation as a 'town centre' would ensure South Queensferry's high street and its retail businesses receive the necessary support and protection to thrive, particularly in the face of the current cost of living crisis, which threatens the vibrancy and very existence of local shops.
In an engaging social media survey on 'The Only Way Is Ferry Facebook Group,' Councillor Hyslop shared the initiative poised to change the face of South Queensferry.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of participants voicing their support for the designation. This strong consensus highlights the community's shared vision for a thriving, resilient Queensferry and echos a collective call to action for its preservation and growth.
